In this episode, I discuss a medication known as gabapentin (Neurontin).
Hey everybody welcome back to drug talk my name is garrett campbell in today’s video we’re going to be doing a more simplified version of a video that we covered in the past on gabapentin or neurontin and we’re starting right now just keep in mind that this channel is for information purposes only so to start this presentation we’ll discuss what this medication
Is used for so gabapentin generally treats seizures and pain caused by shingles we’ll now discuss how to use gabapentin so first off take your medication as directed your dose may need to change several times to find what works best for you if you have epilepsy do not allow more than 12 hours to pass between doses if you’re using the capsule swallow whole
With plenty of water do not open crush or chew it if you’re using the neurontin brand tablet if you break the tablet into two pieces use the second half for your next dose do not use the half tablet if it has been crushed for more than 28 days ago so once you cut that tablet in half you have to use that second half within 28 days now what happens if you miss
A dose so take a dose as soon as you remember but if it is almost time for your next dose wait until then and take a regular dose do not take extra medication to make up for a mistos we’ll now discuss some warnings associated with this medication so tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or if you have kidney problems including patients receiving
Dialysis or lung problems tell your doctor if you have a history of depression or mental health problems do not stop using this medication suddenly your doctor will need to slowly decrease your dose before you stop it completely this medication may make you dizzy or drowsy so do not drive or do anything that could be dangerous until you know how gabapentin affects
You tell any doctor or dentist that treats you that you are using gabapentin because it may affect some medical test results this medication may cause the following problems so a reaction known as dress or drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms multi-organ sensitivity which may damage the liver kidney heart or muscles changes in mood or behavior
Including suicidal thoughts or behavior or respiratory depression when this medication is used with narcotic pain medications over the next couple slides we’ll go over side effects or adverse reactions the first two slides if you experience any of these side effects you would want to get in touch with the physician right away if you had an allergic reaction which
Could present as itching or hives swelling in your face or hands swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat chest tightness or trouble breathing if you have behavior problems aggression restlessness trouble concentrating or moodiness the moodiness would be especially apparent in children or adolescents blistering peeling or red skin rash if you have blue lips
Fingernails or skin chest pain a fast heartbeat or trouble breathing you want to see a physician right away if there’s a change in how much or how often you urinate or if you have bloody or cloudy urine if you have dark urine or pale stools nausea vomiting a loss of appetite stomach pain yellow skin or eyes you’d want to reach out if you have fever chills cough
Sore throat or body aches as well if you have problems with coordination shakiness unsteadiness unusual eye movement and finally if you have rapid weight gain swelling in your hands ankles or feet now these following side effects which if they’re mild you just want to talk to a physician at your next appointment or talk to a pharmacist the next time you pick
Up your prescription so dizziness drowsiness sleepiness or tiredness which could be considered similar side effects main point of this slide is if you’re feeling fatigued it’s not something that you have to rush to see your physician about it is expected with this medication so you can just discuss it at your next appointment all right everybody that’s all we’re
